PLANS FOR RITES AWAIT ARRIAL OF SON , RAE

CLEAR LAKE – Charles W. Wallace, 79, died at his home, 509 S. 3rd Street, Monday evening following an illness of 6 weeks and a long period of declining health. Funeral arrangements are incomplete pending the arrival of a son, Lt. Rae E. Wallace, from the east. The body is at Ward’s Funeral Home.

Mr. Wallace was born May 18, 1866, at York, Carroll County, Ill., son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wallace, and later moved to Morrison, Ill., and then to Iowa. He attended Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, from 1885 to 1887. Jan. 5, 1898 he was married at Mason City to Miss Catherine M. Lonergan. They lived at Mason City, where Mr. Wallace had a barber shop, until 1916 and then moved to Clear Lake.

In 1932 Mr. Wallace was elected justice of the peace and held that office continuously until last January when he resigned because of his health.

Mr. Wallace became a charter member of the Knights of Pythias lodge at Garner March 14, 1890, and served as chancellor commander of that lodge in 1894. He transferred to Mason City lodge No. 70 June 27, 1900, and to Chivalric lodge No. 82, Clear Lake, Dec. 7, 1915. He was secretary of D.O.K.K., Mason City, a number of years. In March, 1940, he was presented a life membership certificate from the state organization and received a congratulatory letter from R.R. Hibbs, Marengo, grand keeper of records and seals at that time.

He also assisted in organization of a Sons of Veterans group in Clear Lake. For a number of years he played fife with the G.A.R. fife and drums corps at Iowa State fair, Des Moines. He was born and reared in the Methodist faith and was a member of that church for many years.

Mr. Wallace was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Miss Lottie Wallace, Goldfield: a brother, T.B. Wallace, Belmond, and a sister who died many years ago. A daughter, Thelma, died Nov. 7, 1927, at the age of 28 years.

Besides Mrs. Wallace and son, he is survived by 2 nephews, William Wallace, Mason City, and Harold Wallace, Vallejo, Cal.

Lt. Wallace was contacted through the Red Cross at Harrisburg, Pa., and has wired that he will arrive Wednesday afternoon. He is a cargo crew officer on the S.S. George Sharswood and recently arrived in the states from a trip to Greece and other middle east areas.
