J. BARLOW, AGED LAKE FARMER, DIES

CLEAR LAKE – James Barlow, 85, farmer living south of Clear Lake, died Sunday morning at a Mason City hospital following a lingering illness. He had lived in this area 73 years.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Ward Funeral Home. Dr. John DeLong, pastor of the Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery.

James Barlow was born April 12, 1873, the son of Ellia and Sarah Barlow, at Mt. Horeb, Wis. When he was 12 years old he came with his parents by covered wagon to a farm south of Clear Lake. He attended the local schools and later farmed with his father.

On Dec. 25, 1892, he was married to Nettie Van Horn at the home of her parents south of the city. They later bought the farm where they had since lived.

He served as assessor for Mt. Vernon Township for 30 years and was director of Mt. Vernon 4 School for many years.

Surviving are his wife, three sons, Wayne, Swaledale; Dale, Clear Lake, and Vern, Route 1, Mason City; three daughters, Gae Oehlson, Chicago; Mrs. Ralph Caffrey, Garner, and Mrs. Chester Wood, Coffeeville, Kan.; 18 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Also surviving are a brother, Tom Barlow, Clear Lake, and three sisters, Mrs. Fred Best, Rockwell; Mrs. George Best, Cohassett, Minn., and Eve Siesseger, Mason City.

One son, Lloyd; two brothers, William and Edward, and one sister, Mrs. George Raw, preceded him in death.
