HARRY C. “STUB” O’BRIEN

Harry C. “Stub” O’Brien, 71, died at his home in Oakwood Park on Clear Lake’s south shore. He had suffered a heart condition for the last nine years.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Osthus Funeral Home with the Rev. Alvern Kinrade, pastor of the United Methodist Church officiating. Masonic services were held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial was in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Mr. O’Brien was born Aug. 13, 1900 in Alexandria, Minn., the son of Charles and Christine (Peterson) O’Brien. He was graduated from high school in Alexandria and from Carlton College, Northfield, Minn.

In 1925 he moved to Fort Dodge to play semi-pro baseball. He was married to Ethel Teed in Clear Lake June 9, 1926. In 1927 they began operation of a cottage business along with the O’Brien Grocery. In 1967, they sold the grocery business but continued the cottage operation.

Besides being involved in baseball, Mr. O’Brien was an avid sportsman, known for his interest in conservation, hunting and fishing. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and Masonic Verity Lodge.

He is survived by his wife and three brothers, Charles, Marshall, Minn.; Peter, Sun City, Ariz.; and Raymond, Osakis, Minn.

Active pallbearers included Hobart Duncan, Dr. Frank Ward, Earl Kimball, Harold Thompson, Deland Kilroy and Alex Speaker. Honorary pallbearers included E.B. Stillman, Leo Stork, John Kopecky, Dr. James Hunter, Art Butts and William Oxley. Mrs. Harry Mason was organist.

The family is requesting that any memorials be given to the United Methodist Church elevator fund.
