MARTHA “MARTY” BAYLOR CHAMPLIN

MASON CITY — Mrs. Martha (Marty) Baylor Champlin, 85, of 1328 First St. N.W., Mason City, formerly of Clear Lake, died Monday (March 9, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services are set for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with Mr. Steve Myers officiating. Interment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.
Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the Marty Baylor Champlin memorial fund.

Marty was born Aug. 28, 1912, in rural Montezuma, the daughter of J.K. and Myrtle (Wright) Myers. She attended country school and then moved with her family at an early age to Cedar Rapids, where she graduated from high school. Following high school, she attended beauty school. She was a beautician in Cedar Rapids.

Marty married Robert C. Baylor on Sept. 17, 1938, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They moved to Mason City and later to Clear Lake. She was a beauty operator at the Palais Wave Salon in Mason City, and then at Nesbit’s Beauty Shop in Clear Lake. Marty later worked at the Chappell Clinic in Clear Lake. After Robert’s death on Jan. 19, 1973, she married James (Al) Champlin on Dec. 29, 1973. They lived in Benson, Ariz., and later moved to Mesa, Ariz. Al preceded her in death in December 1989. Marty moved back to Clear Lake, and in 1996, moved to Mason City.

She enjoyed cooking, knitting, fabric stenciling and fishing on Clear Lake. She was a member of Friendship Club.

Marty is survived by her son, Bill Baylor, and his wife, Gayle, rural Nora Springs; one step-daughter, Cheryl Monson of Mason City; four grandchildren, Scott Baylor and his wife, Carrie Marie, of San Angelo, Texas, Dawn Familetti and her husband, Scott, of Reedsburg, Wis., Martha Gilley and her husband, Brian, of Shawnee, Kan., and Paul Baylor of Rockwell; two step-grandchildren, Lori West of Forest City, and Dan Monson of Lake Mills; two great-grandchildren, Zachary Baylor and C.J. "Bear" Baylor; three step-great-grandchildren, Zack Crail, Ryan Pederson and Brandy Crail.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, and two brothers, Glenn and Ralph Myers.
