After high school, he went to Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa graduating in 1939 with a B.A. degree in business. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific during World War II, from 1942-1945. He attained the rank of major in the Marine Corps Reserve.
After returning home, John went to work with his father, Ray E. Pauley Company, a sheet metal and heating and air conditioning firm. This Lennox dealership was the oldest Lennox dealership in the United States.
On Jan. 15, 1947, he married Domini V. Haynes at the First Christian Church in Mason City. John became president of Ray E. Pauley Company in 1954 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1984. He and Domini then divided the next 20 years living in Mason City and spending the winters at their home in Naples, Fla.
John’s greatest joy was his grandchildren. He loved spending his time with them, and never missed an opportunity to participate in their lives. He also was an avid golfer, fisherman and card player. He made seven holes-in-one during his golfing career. John traveled often to northern Minnesota and Canada to fish with his buddies, and played cards with a passion at the Mason City Country Club. In his later years, he enjoyed meeting up with his morning coffee friends at McDonald’s in Mason City to tell stories and solve the problems of the world. Before an illness curtailed his activity, John could often be seen on early morning walks throughout Mason City and Naples.
During his life, John was a member of the Elks Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Masonic Temple, Rotary International, Mason City Country Club, First Methodist Church in Mason City, Marine Corps Reserve, and the Cornell College Alumni Association.
