Obituary - Margaret "Jean" (Phalen) Paulson
December 05, 1921 ~ May 05, 2008

Mason City- Margaret Jean Paulson, 86, of 1719 South Hampshire Ave, Mason City, died Monday, May 5, 2008 at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City, from Alzheimer’s disease.

A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, May 8, 2008 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Josephs Catholic Church, 302 5th Street Southeast, Mason City, with Reverend Craig E. Steimel officiating. Burial will take place at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery following the service. Memorials may be made out to the family in memory of Margaret Jean Paulson.

Mrs. Robert (Jean) Paulson was born December 5, 1921, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Tim and Nina (Cowan) Phalen. She graduated from St. Joseph High School, Mason City Junior College, and Hamilton’s Business College. She married Robert Paulson April 10, 1944 in Dubuque, at the St. Raphael Cathedral.

She was employed at Phalen Dry Cleaners for 37 years before retiring. She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where she was a Eucharistic Minister for many years. She was also a volunteer at Mercy Hospital in the Critical Care Unit for many years and had put in 750 hours.

She was active in square dancing, ballroom dancing, and line dancing. As a child, she competed in equestrian events, where she won many ribbons.

She and her husband went camping all over the west. They traveled to Hawaii and the Dominican Republic. She loved birds, plants, especially cacti, flowers, quilting, crocheting, sewing, and knitting. She was involved in all of her husband’s doings, including Boy Scout activities.

For the last four months, Jean had lived at the Heritage Care Center, where she had received tremendous care from the employees.

Jean is survived by her devoted husband, Bob, Mason City, daughters, Sheila Paulson, Des Moines, and Janine (Bert) Hendricks, Great Falls, Montana, grandsons, Rob Suchan, Atlantic, Iowa and Tim (Trina) Suchan, Des Moines, Iowa, her brother in law, Roger (Rosalie) Paulson, Mason City, and her sister in laws, Ardys, Inez and Charlene, along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tim Phalen, former Sheriff of Cerro Gordo County, and Nina Cowan Phalen, sister, Colleen Church, and brothers, Dan Phalen, and Tim Phalen Jr., and her grandson Jacob Suchan, who at the age of 11 was killed in an auto accident.
