BERNICE “SHORTY" LOUISE JOHNSON

CLEAR LAKE -- Bernice "Shorty" Louise Johnson, 69, died Friday (Nov. 29, 1996) at the Oakwood Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Fred Lewis of the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 18 West, Mason City. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, and from 8:30 a.m.
until time of services on Tuesday, at the funeral chapel.

Bernice ``Shorty'' Louise Johnson was born July 24, 1927. At Colo, the daughter of Jesse and Bernice Amy (Dayton) Day. She attended and received her education in the Colo Schools, graduating from Colo High School in 1945. While going to school she worked as a waitress. After completing her schooling, she worked for the Donnelly Corporation in Nevada until moving to Clear Lake in 1946, where she worked as a waitress and bartender in several businesses. She also worked for E.F. Johnson Company, Sperry Industries, Unysis Corporation, and was also secretary for the Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce. In 1983, Bernice and her husband purchased the Drift Inn in Alexander, which they continued to operate until her retirement in 1989.

She enjoyed gardening, canning, bowling, and ice skating, and was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins and Viking football teams, as well as the Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball teams, and she loved life. She was a member of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary Post 4868 and leader of Cub Scout and Brownie troops.

Survivors include her husband, Calvin Johnson of Clear Lake; one daughter, Diane Kay Lyons and her husband, Fran, of Loveland, Colo.; one son, David Allen Johnson of Loveland, Colo.; three grandchildren, Timothy Lyons and his wife, Wendy, Mark Lyons, and Matthew Johnson; one sister, Margaret Adams and her husband, Deane, of Brackville, Texas; one brother, Earl Maurice Day of Brackville, Texas; as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Isabelle Lehrkamp; and one brother, James Eugene Day.
