Obituary - Rev. Dr. Frederick Carl Hinz

The Rev. Dr. Frederick C. Hinz 82, of Fredericksburg, VA died in Christ Saturday, April 4, 2009, after a valiant effort to regain his health following recent heart surgery.

The Rev. Hinz was born May 15, 1926, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of the Rev. Carl A. and Helen M. Schroth Hinz. He attended Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Mo., receiving a Masters of Divinity degree, as well as a masters in Greek from Washington University in 1950.

He moved to New York, where he served with distinction as a Lutheran educator for 38 years. While pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bayside, N.Y., he also taught Greek at Concordia College in Bronxville. In the early 1960s, he played a central role in establishing, and became headmaster of, Martin Luther High School in Queens, N.Y., a position in which he served until his retirement in 1988.

He received an honorary doctorate from Concordia College in 1982. He served as president and project director for the nationwide Association of Lutheran Secondary Schools. He also helped establish and develop the East Coast Association of Congregations (ECAC), in support of Concordia College. In his retirement, he enjoyed serving fellow ministers as a specialist in clergy tax preparation.

In 1968, he married Esther Keekley of Milwaukee, with whom he raised four beloved daughters. She preceded him in death in 1988.

The Rev. Hinz is survived by his wife, Lucille "Dollie" Freed Hinz, a childhood sweetheart with whom he reconnected in 1995. They enjoyed 12 blessed years of marriage, moving to Fredericksburg in 1998.

He also is survived by his brother, the Rev. Richard Hinz and his wife, Deanna, of Fredericksburg; four stepdaughters: Kathleen Henkin and her husband, Jeffrey, of Pawling, N.Y., Mary Steinke and her husband, William, of Middlebury, Ind., Carolyn Bernot and her husband, John, of Gilbert, Ariz., and Barbara Swetman and her husband, Rick, of Austin, Texas; five granddaughters, four nephews, six grandnephews and four grandnieces.

A funeral in celebration of the Resurrection for the Rev. Hinz was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Fredericksburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Martin Luther High School, 6002 Maspeth Ave., Maspeth, N.Y., or to Redeemer Lutheran Church and Christian Preschool, 5120 Harrison Road, Fredericksburg, Va. 22408.
