Mr. Arthur E. Ashland, 76, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997 at
the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 6, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake,
with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake
Cemetery, Clear Lake, with military honors by the Clear Lake VFW. Family
suggests memorials to American Diabetes Foundation or American Heart
Association.

Art was born July 10, 1921 in Grant Township, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa on the
family farm the son of John and Eva (Hanschu) Ashland. He graduated from the
Clear Lake High School in 1937. Art farmed in the Clear Lake area and then
attended Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa.

Art served in the Army Air Corp during World War II as a First Lt. and flew a
B25 on over 32 missions in the European Theater. He moved back to Clear Lake
following the war and worked for Duesenberg Construction. He later drove a car
transport out of Pontiac, Mich., until 1958 then moved back to Clear Lake. He
operated a trucking business and later farmed for over 20 years. Art married
Eunice Bienert on Nov. 24, 1961 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. They
moved to their present home in Clear Lake.

He worked for Farm Bureau for over 20 years as Hail Crop adjuster. He was well
known in the area for snow removal. He loved to fish, bowl, watch all sports,
farm, ride his motorcycle, and feed his cats. He served on the Clear Lake VFW
honor guard for many years. Art was a loving husband and father and will be
sadly missed by all.

Art was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, a life member of Clear
Lake VFW and a charter member Clear Lake AmVets.

He is survived by his wife, Eunice Ashland, Clear Lake; four children, Kathy
Ashland, Las Vegas, Nev., Dixie Crump and her husband, Richard, St. Joseph, Mo.,
Donna Hansen and her husband, Darrell, Pekin, Ill., and Diane Heibel and her
husband, Conrad, Thornton, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren;
brothers, Ron Ashland and his wife, Betty, Blair, Neb., Wayne Ashland and his
wife, Joan, Clear Lake, and John Ashland and his wife, Barbara, Richfield,
Minn.; two aunts, Edna Ashland, Clear Lake, and Louise Ashland, Mason City,
Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Robert Evenson; and one
brother, Albert Ashland.

Organist Karen Harthan accompanied soloist Marilyn Sadler.

Honorary pallbearers were Conrad Heibel Jr., Rex Westcott, Keith Steege, Jim
Buck, Tim Heibel, Bill Borchard, Robert Buck, DuWayne Haugen, George Eliason.

Pallbearers were Ron Ashland, John Ashland, Conrad Heibel, Wayne Ashland,
Darrell Hansen, Richard Crump.
