Hazel K. Friest, 93, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday, May 7, 1997 at the
Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 10 at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear
Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake
Cemetery, Clear Lake.

The family suggests memorials to the American Heart Association or the
American Cancer Society.

Hazel was born Oct. 9, 1903 on the family farm in rural Clear Lake, the
daughter of Soren and Johanna K. (Madsen) Villadsen. She attended rural school
in Clear Lake.

On Jan. 27, 1921 she was united in marriage to Chris Sorensen. They farmed
together north of Clear Lake. They eventually sold the farm to purchase a
grocery store located on North 8th Street, Clear Lake. Chris preceded her in
death on May 24, 1971.

Hazel was employed at the Clear Lake Creamery and State Brand Creamery. She
worked at the Surf Ballroom until it burned, then was employed at Billy's
Casino in Clear Lake as a waitress. When the Surf was rebuilt she worked
at the Surf.

On Nov. 10, 1973 she married Marshall Friest. He preceded her in death on Feb.
18, 1992.

Hazel was a member of the Patience Circle at Zion Lutheran Church, where she
was a member. She was also a member of Danish Brotherhood. Her hobbies
included tatting, crocheting and raising flowers.

She is survived by four sons, Donald Friest and his wife, Marge, of Mason
City, Iowa, Jim Friest and his wife, Rita, of Decorah, Iowa, Robert Friest and
his wife, Mary Sue, of Clear Lake and Ken Friest and his wife, Anita, of Clear
Lake; two sisters, Ellen Steege, of Clear Lake, and Anna Freeman of Hammond,
Ind.; a sister-in-law, Lucille Villadsen, Lake Station, Ind.; seven
grandchildren, Jon Friest of Indianola, Iowa, Blane Friest of Waukesha, Wis.,
Scott Friest and his wife, Sharon, of Clear Lake, D.J. Friest of Decorah, Greg
Friest and his wife, Wendy, of Kensett, Iowa, Jennifer Friest of Waterloo,
Iowa, and Amy Friest of Mason City; five great-grandchildren, Travis, Amanda,
Kenneth, Jacob and Dylan; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; and five brothers.

Organist Joyce TenHaken accompanied soloist Bonnie Hall.

Honorary pallbearers were Clair Heifner, Margaret Casperson, Millie Matson,
Eleanor Wubben.

Pallbearers were Clayton Lincicum, Jack Gilles, Gene Ehlert, Jesse Pate, Bill
Stoyles, and Jim Hovelson.
