Dr. Michael D. Fredericks D.V.M., 66, of Clear Lake, died suddenly Tuesday, Feb.
23, 2010 at his home. A Celebration of Life Service was held on Saturday, Feb.
27, at First Congregational Church in Clear Lake with Pastor Jeff Ungs
officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date.

Michael Dale Fredericks, son of Dale W. and Faith Fredericks, was born March 4,
1943, in Iowa Falls, Iowa. Mike graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1961.
He graduated from Mason City Junior College then attended Iowa State University
where he graduated from the Veterinary Medicine School in 1968. Mike was
affiliated with Omega Tau Sigma Professional Veterinary Fraternity and Phi Zeta
Honorary Veterinary Fraternity. He married Monica Salisbury in Ames, Iowa on
Sept. 22, 1963.

Mike (Doc) was known to many and loved by all. He was married to his loving
wife, Monica, the only woman in his life for over 50 years, whom he adored and
shared a lifelong journey with. He cherished his children, Michell, who he
passed on his love of animals, especially horses, as he taught her to ride and
looked on proudly as she competed in equestrian events. Together, they went on
many vet calls, creating a lasting bond between the two. Mike spent endless
hours watching his son, Marty J, excel as an athlete in both high school and
college and enjoyed the many fishing trips they shared together. He beamed with
pride at the man and father his son became. One of his last gifts in life were
his two grandchildren, Ava and Emily, with whom he loved to spend time.

Mike had a passion for fishing and spent many fun-filled hours with his buddies
on Clear Lake fishing from his boat during summer months and ice fishing in the
winter. He loved the outdoors and appreciated everything Mother Nature had to
offer. He especially enjoyed the spring of the year, the birthing season. He
marveled at the bond which instinctively developed between mare and foal. Mike
was also an avid Iowa sports fan who cheered during many Iowa Hawkeye games
with his brother, Steve, and both of their sons.

Professionally, Doc was calm in times of stress and his demeanor provided a
leveling influence in conflicting situations. His patience and kindness made
him a gentle doctor. Doc’s passion for veterinary medicine and his commitment
to quality health care was evidenced in his being the first veterinarian in the
state of Iowa to purchase an ultra-sound machine. He was known for his equine
expertise and his dedicated service to the horse industry. Mike was a member
of The American Quarter Horse Association, Iowa Veterinary Medical Association,
American Veterinary Medical Association, and Horsemen of Iowa. He will be most
remembered and revered as a compassionate man and gentle veterinarian whose life
was dedicated to caring for the animals he so loved, and the people in his life
that meant the most to him.

Mike is survived by his wife, Monica, of Clear Lake; two children, Michell
Fredericks and her partner, Barbara Mathers, of Tuscon, Az. and Marty Fredericks
and his wife, Ann, of West Des Moines. Iowa; his mother-in-law, Elvera
Salisbury, Clear Lake; his brothers, Steve Fredericks and wife, Jane, of Iowa
City, Iowa and Jeffrey Fredericks of Dubuque, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Maria
Salud; two granddaughters, Ava and Emily.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; his brother, William
Fredericks; an infant sister, Dawn Fredericks; and his father-in-law, Winfred
Salisbury.
