HAYUNGS, ACKLEY, SMIT, MINTON, SONQUIST

Ernist "Ernie" D. Hayungs, 61, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998 at
St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 20, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Clear
Lake, with the Rev. Jana Swenson officiating. Internment was at the Clear Lake
Cemetery, Clear Lake. Memorials may be made to the Ernist D. Hayungs Memorial
Fund. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of
arrangements.

Ernist was born Aug. 8, 1937, in rural Marble Rock, Iowa, the son of Nikolaus
(Claus) and Thelma (Ackley) Hayungs. He married Ione Smit on Aug. 12, 1956, at
Merservey, Iowa. He graduated from Meservey High School in 1955, and lived in
Meservey until they moved to Clear Lake in 1957. He worked for Davis and Keith
Construction, Clear Lake, 1955 to 1963, Young Consruction, Garner, Iowa,
1963-1965, Great Plains Lumber Yard, Mason City, 1965 to 1972, Great Plains
Kensett Home Division, Kensett, Iowa, as Plant Superintendent, 1972 to 1985,
at which time he was forced to retire due to ill health. Ernist had a lung
transplant on May 20, 1992. He enjoyed golf, fishing, picture framing,
woodworking, family and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Ione Hayungs, Clear Lake; three children, Lynn
Hayungs and his wife, Martha, McAllen, Texas, Brian Hayungs, and his wife,
Gayle, Highlands Ranch, Colo., Brenda Minton and her husband, Brad, New
Braunfels, Texas; two brothers, Larry Hayungs and his wife, Emilie,
Carterville, Ill., and Roger Hayungs and his wife, Mary, Rolfe, Iowa; one
sister, Donna Sonquist, Harlingen, Texas; nine grandchildren, Ryan, Curtis,
Kyle, Dustin Hayungs, McAllen, Texas, Jake and Justin Hayungs, Highland Ranch,
Colo., Jessica, Nikolaus, Abby Minton, New Braunfels, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Robert Hayungs; and one
nephew, Nick Perkins.
