Dr. V. Strode Hinds, 69, died unexpectedly Aug. 3, 1997.

Services will be held today (Wednesday), Aug. 6, at 11 a.m. at the First
United Methodist Church with the Rev. Doresa Collogan officiating. Burial will
be in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake on Thursday, Aug. 7, with an 11 a.m.
graveside service.

The family suggests memorials be given to the Lewis and Clark Heritage Trail
Foundation.

Dr. Hinds was born Sept. 29, 1927 in Clear Lake, Iowa the son of Vern and
Francis (Strode) Hinds. He graduated from Clear Lake High School. In 1945 he
entered the U.S. Naval Reserves and served until 1946 in Pacific and Southeast
Asia aboard the U.S.S. Saufley. He attended and graduated from Mason City
Junior College. In 1948 he entered the University of Iowa School of Dentistry
and received his D.D.S. in 1952 and his M.S. in oral surgery in 1954. He
married Beverly Rowland on Sept. 6, 1953 in Osage. They lived in Iowa City
where he taught oral surgery at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry
until they moved to Sioux City in 1958. He practiced oral surgery in Sioux
City until his retirement in June of 1992.

He was a member of the American Dental Association, Iowa Dental Association
member and trustee, N.W. Iowa Dental Association, Iowa Society of Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgeons member and past president, Midwest Society of Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgeons, Member medical staff of St. Luke's Medical Center and
Marian Health Center, Chamber of Commerce member, Waterways Committee, Past
President Sioux City Rotary Club, 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, Member Abu
Bekr Shrine.

Dr. Hinds was active with Boys Scouts, serving as committee chair and post
advisor. He was one of the founders of Rivercade and Port Admiral in 1989, and
was a member of National Lewis and Clark Heritage Trail Foundation serving as
president from 1981-82. He also hosted the National Convention in Sioux City
in 1996 and he and his wife received the Meritorious Achievement Award in
1996.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly; two sons, Mark and his wife, Ann, Sioux
City, Steve and his wife, Maureen, DeSoto, Texas; and one daughter, Lynne
Hinds Peterson and her husband, Walter; seven grandchildren, Sarah, Katherine
and Brad Hinds, Sioux City, Justin and Jared Hinds, DeSoto, and Spenser and
Alexis Peterson, Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers will be Dr. C. Edward Anderson, Dr. Darrel Baker, Dr. Wayne
Barnes, Dr. Richard Dohrmann, Dr. William Hollander and Dr. Richard Wagner.
