Esther Holmes, 80, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday, July 29, 1997, at
Integrated Health Services, Des Moines, Iowa.

A funeral service was held Saturday, Aug. 2, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess of Zion Lutheran Church
officiating. Burial was in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Elnora Esther Holmes was born July 22, 1917, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter
of Herman and Tillie (Aswegen) Beenken. She married Harry Holmes on March 10,
1934, in Mason City.

Esther and her husband farmed in the Mason City and Clear Lake area. They
moved into Clear Lake in 1953. She enjoyed playing Bingo, reading, gardening,
and she loved to cook.

She is survived by three children, Lindy Lee Holmes and his wife, Pat, Rolla,
Mo., May Lois Helvik and her husband, Kelvin, Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Harry
Martin Holmes and his wife, Carolyn, Birdsboro, Pa.; one sister, Ida Thompson,
Sequim, Wash.; 15 grandchildren, Lindy L., Sidney, Paul, David and Valerie
Holmes, Dorothea Henderson, Diana Lee and Carey Ward Pope, Allyn and Kevin
Roberts, Debra Hawkinson, Renee Marrs, Lorna Smith, Daniel Hansen, Sarah Moen,
and Jon, Michael, Brent Helvik; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Fay
Marrs; an infant son, Follett; and several brothers and sisters.
