Emery "Bud" Ulve Thoe, 80, formerly of Webster City, Iowa, died Sunday, Dec.
20, 1998 at the Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday), Dec. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at the
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean
Hess officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials may
be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Emery was born July 23, 1918 at Lake Mills, Iowa, the son of Lewis Emery and
Ida (Ulve) Thoe. He grew up in Lake Mills and graduated from Lake Mills High
School in 1936. On Feb. 1941 he married Gertrude Oss of Spring Valley, Minn.
He was in the Army Airforce during World War II for five years. Most of his
time in service was spent at Tampa, Fla., and Greenville, S.C. Emery received
the Good Conduct Medal while serving in the service. He has been a member of
the American Legion since 1945.

When Emery was discharged from the service, he went to work at Woodford
Wheeler Lumber Company in 1945. While there he received on the job training
under GI Bill of Rights. While at Clear Lake, he joined Zion

Lutheran Church when Reubon Mostrom was pastor. He was also a Boy Scout leader
while in Clear Lake. In 1951 they moved to Storm Lake, Iowa, and Emery worked
for a Wisconsin Lumber yard. In 1957 they moved to Webster City and he worked
for Raven Lumber Company until it was destroyed by fire. Continuing to live in
Webster City, he was employed at Blairsburg

Co-op Elevator from 1960 to 1970. In 1970 he was asked to be employed at the
Kamrar Co-op Elevator and did so until 1980 at which time he retired. The
family continued to live in Webster City.

On June 16, 1994, Emery became a resident at Iowa Veterans Home in
Marshalltown, Iowa after becoming ill with the devastating illness called
Alzheimer’s.

He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Thoe, Webster City; three children, Emery
Richard Thoe and his wife, Elaine, Colorado Springs, Colo., Larry Donald Thoe,
Fairmont, Minn., and Pamela Sue Reginold, Evansdale, Iowa; two sisters,
Laurene Parker, Newhall, Calif., Lillian Haag, Des Moines, Iowa; one brother,
Donald R. Thoe, Skagway, Alaska; seven grandchildren; four
great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Gerald Lee Thoe, who was two
years old when he died in 1949; and one sister, Elaine Brattrud.
