Dr. Richard E. CALHOUN, 82, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit of North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa. A Memorial service was held Saturday, Feb. 24 at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake with the Rev. Fred LEWIS officiating. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel was in charge of arrangements. The body has been donated to the University of Iowa Hospital college of medicine. Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church, Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit of North Iowa or the Clear Lake Senior Citizens.

Richard was born June 17, 1918, in Lake Mills, Iowa, the son of Joseph Alexander and Mable (BRYANT) CALHOUN. He graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1935, attended Iowa State Teachers College, Mason City Junior College, and graduated from the University of Missouri Dental College in 1943. Richard married LaVerne SATTLER Feb. 19, 1944 in Corpus Cristi, Texas.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a Lt. Commander during WW II, served on the USS Black Hawk in Sing Tow China. Following the service he moved to Clear Lake. In April, 1946 he started practice with Dr. A. A. Joslyn and practiced for over 44 years, retiring in 1990. He worked with the Christian Dental Missionary, traveling to St. Vincents, Dominican Republic, Granada and Jamaica. He was Cub Master for Pack #103.

Richard was a member and enjoyed singing in the choir at the United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the North Iowa Men's Garden Club, Men's Bridge Club, Clear Lake Rotary and Past President, a Life member of the Iowa Dental Society, Past President of the North Central District of Dental Society. He loved playing cribbage, bridge, fishing, golfing and hunting.

Richard is survived by his wife LaVerne CALHOUN, Clear Lake; two sons Richard CALHOUN and his wife Sandy, Colorado Springs, Colo. and Dr. Robert CALHOUN, Edmunds, Wash.; two grandchildren, Michelle and Jeff CALHOUN; one brother, John CALHOUN and his wife Roz, Mason City, Iowa.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother Joseph CALHOUN.
