MASON CITY - Elwood E. SMITH, 57, of 8 Quincy Terrace, Mason City, died Friday (Jan. 27, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Hogan- Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with Pastor Thomas HEALEY, hospice chaplain, officiating. Full military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veteran's Association following the memorial service. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be one hour before the service.

Memorials may be directed to Elwood E. SMITH Memorial Fund.

Elwood E. SMITH was born April 15, 1948, in Buffalo Center, Iowa, son of Dwight and Wilma (SPIKER) SMITH. He attended Mason City public schools.

Elwood enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and fought during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/2*, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/device, Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/palm and Rifle Marksman Badge.

He was united in marriage to Linda HOLDING on June 28, 1972, in South Dakota. Elwood worked at Park Hospital and Ozark Roofing. He enjoyed listening to music, boxing, stock car racing and gardening.

Elwood will be greatly missed by his wife, Linda SMITH, Mason City; daughter, Katy (Donald) WITT, Mason City; daughter, Christina (Roy) LEIGHTER, Madison Lake, Minn.; son, Don BETTS, Amarillo, Texas; eight grandchildren, Billy WITT, Christopher FRIETAS, Anthony FRIETAS, D.J. WARDEN, Daniel LEIGHTER, Cameron LEIGHTER, Tamera BETTS and Donnie Lee BETTS; sister, Carol (Richard) FRANK, Emmit, Idaho; brothers, Roger (Vivian) SMITH, Payette, Idaho, and Arlan (Joyce) SMITH, Key Heights, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
