MASON CITY – CDR. Glen A. SNELL, USN retired, died at the age of 83 on Monday, January 30, 2006, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, following a heart attack in December 2005. Memorial Services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, (February 18, 2006) at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave with the Rev. Verlyn SNELL officiating. A gathering of friends and family will be held one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Alzheimers Research fund or Hospice of North Iowa.

Glen SNELL was born Oct. 6, 1922, in Colfax, IA, to LuVern and Anna (RASMUSSEN) SNELL. He married Mary E. HOWELL of Vinita, OK on May 24, 1942, in National City, CA.

He left Iowa as a Kensett High School graduate when he joined the U.S. Navy as an enlisted man in 1941. Glen honorably served our country for 30 years in the U.S. Naval Submarine Service beginning with War Patrols in the Pacific during World War II. Highlights of his naval career include, and are not limited to, earning a commisson as an officer; Officer in Charge of the building and commissioning of the Submarine Tender, USS Hunley, AS31; founding staff member of Submarine Squadron Fifteen, Quam and Commanding Officer of U.S. Naval Prison, Portsmouth, ME.

Following retirement from the Navy as a full Commander, he completed Post Graduate studies at the University of Oklahoma and later became a Realtor in the state of Washington. He was also a Private/Commercial Pilot and enjoyed woodworking and photography. He returned to Kensett, IA in February of 1999 and later moved into assisted living at The Homestead in Mason City.

Glen is survived by his children, Dean (Donna) of Okanogan, WA; Dennis (Maryann) of Hammonton, NJ; and Sena (Brian) of Kaneohe, HI, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, sister Bonnie BERGMAN of Mason City, IA and brother Verlyn (Sammy) SNELL of Overland Park, KS.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary E. (HOWELL) SNELL, his parents, two brothers Morris and Dean SNELL and his sister Marian (SNELL) PALMERTON.

The family would like to thank the staff and friends at Mason City Homestead and Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City for their exceptional support and assistance.
