CYPRESS, Calif. - Martha "Mutt" SLAUGHTER of Cypress, Calif., passed away on Wednesday (Jan. 11, 2006).

Martha, the daughter of Mike and Adnora (EDDY) HADDY was born on Nov. 24, 1917, in Scarville. She was raised in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School in 1935.

Martha came to California during World War II and worked for the original Thriftimart Supermarket chain. She retired from Thriftimart Supermarkets after 33 years as an office manager.

Martha truly enjoyed her retirement going "up and down the road." She was an active member of the Long Beach Emblem Club #106, having joined in 1951. Martha held many chairmanships and enjoyed participating in all of the Emblem Club's activities, including being mistress of ceremonies for several of the Emblem Club's variety shows. Her two favorite Emblem Club programs were the Scholarship program and the sponsorship of the Long Beach K9 Unit. Martha was also a 50-year life member of the Order of Eastern Star-Meridian Chapter #310.

Martha enjoyed golf, bowling, reading, traveling, shopping, attending theater productions and being with her family and friends.

Martha is survived by her husband of 48 years, Kenneth; one step-son, Larry SLAUGHTER; two sisters, Elizabeth CHRISTENSEN of Long Beach, Calif., and Betty BECK of Dayton, Ohio; one brother and sister-in-law, James and Maxine HADDY of Indio, Calif.; five nieces; three nephews; four grand-nieces; and seven grand-nephews; as well as many close friends and neighbors.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, Taft HADDY of Tyron, Neb., William "Bill" HADDY of Mason City, Thomas HADDY of Redwood City, Calif., and George HADDY of Mason City; and one sister, Mae (HADDY) SHARP of Long Beach, Calif.

Martha will be missed for her enjoyment of life, humor, compassion, good counsel, and love for her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Martha SLAUGHTER'S memory to the Long Beach Emblem Club No. 106 "General Charity Fund," P.O. Box 15208, Long Beach, CA 90815-0208.

Private services will be held at the Riverside National Cemetery.

A memorial reception will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at the Lakewood Elks Lodge #1570, 12507 E. Carson St. Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.

The family was assisted by McKenzie Mortuary, (562) 961-9301.
