Obituary - Wayne Lloyd Schmalle

Wayne SCHMALLE, 89, of Thornton, died Monday, November 8, 2010 at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Thornton, with Pastor Milton D. JOHNSON presiding. Interment will be at Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Wednesday at Retz Funeral Home, Thornton. In lieu of flowers Wayne's family suggests memorials may be directed to Opportunity Village or St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in his memory.

Wayne Lloyd SCHMALLE was born October 11, 1921 on a farm S.W. of Thornton, Iowa the oldest child of S.H. 'Sam' and Nellie (MERCHANT) SCHMALLE. He was baptized at the Thornton United Methodist Church. He attended school in Thornton and graduated from high school with the class of 1940.

On December 26, 1943 Wayne married Beulah HARTWIG at the Lutheran Parsonage in Thornton. He became a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1945. He farmed with his father and in 1946 was inducted into the Army and served for two years.

When he returned from the service he and Beulah moved onto their own farm two miles south of Thornton where they lived for 39 years. During this time he held various positions on the Farmers Coop Board, church council at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Cerro Gordo Cattlemen's Association and ASC Committeeman.

In 1986 Wayne retired and he and Beulah moved into Thornton.

He enjoyed doing things for others, helped organize the Babe Ruth League and for ten years kept the ball diamond mowed and in shape. He loved to go for rides on his motorcycle, often with Beulah as his passenger. He enjoyed going fox hunting with his buddies and playing pinochle. He also enjoyed the many bus trips he and Beulah took to most of the states and even Mexico, Canada and Alaska.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 66 years, Beulah; sister, Ardeth (Alvin) AASTRUP; brother, Verdell (Bonnie) SCHMALLE; brother-in-law, Paul (Mildred) HARTWIG; nephews, Douglas CAFFERY, Verlynn (Ann) SCHMALLE, Robert HARTWIG; nieces, Margaret (Douglas) YODER, Marlys (Mike) KALLIS, Jennifer RUSSELL, Sibyl (Jim) JORGENSON; special friends, Dale (Carol) McBRIDE and family and Susan GREEN.

Wayne is preceded in death by his parents; sister: Lois (Roger) CAFFERY and nephew Jerry AASTRUP.

Retz Funeral Home of Thornton was in charge of arrangements.
