Mitchel Dean HARTWIG passed away September 11, 2010 at the Muse Norris Hospice Center in Mason City, Iowa. His earthly life was prematurely ended after a fight with Melanoma.

Mitchel was born in Belmond, Iowa on June 28, 1943 to George "Tom" and Irene HARTWIG, and grew up on a farm outside of Thornton, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church ELCA in Thornton.

He married Rosalie SUNTKEN on June 23, 1965, and the couple proudly raised their three children Guy, Angie, and Matthew.

Mitchel was a proud graduate of Thornton High School Class of 1961, and counted spending time with his classmates in the years that followed one of his great enjoyments. Mitchel was very active in the community, serving on the boards of Mason City Gas & Oil, St. Paul Lutheran Church of Thornton, and the Meservey-Thornton Community School. He was very engaged in the activities of his children, serving as a 4-H leader, basketball coach, and member of the booster club.

Mitchel greatly enjoyed time with his family and especially his 7 grandchildren. He was also fond of fishing trips up North, playing in fast pitch softball leagues, playing cards, coffee with 'the boys,' and collecting farm toys and other antiques from across the Midwest.

Mitchel is survived by his wife Rosalie; son Guy (Jill) and grandchildren Rachel, Emmery, and Camryn of Woodbury, Minnesota; daughter Angie KINSETH (Rick) and grandchildren Benjamin, Morgan, Elijah, and Maya of Belmond; son Matthew of Washington, DC; sister Leilani DANNEN (Ron) of Mason City; brother Max HARTWIG (Gaylynn) of Lake Forest, Illinois; aunt Doris NICHOLSON; many nieces and nephews; and numerous relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
