A FATAL SHOT
A Fourteen-Year-Old Boy Accidentally Kills His Mother.

Sunday morning Mrs. Julia TILDEN met with a very painful and maybe fatal accident. Her son, Augustine Ross, a lad of fourteen years, had a 22-calibre revolver, which he bad borrowed from a companion. The mother asked him to show her the workings of the weapon. Neither thought the weapon loaded and the boy, in demonstrating how to shoot it, pointed at her.

The revolver was discharged, but unhappily it was loaded. The ball took effect in the right breast of Mrs. Tilden right over the lung. Drs. EGLOFF and MARSTON were called and made an attempt to extract the ball, but their efforts were unavailing.

On Monday she lay almost in a comatose state, but rallied to some extent in the evening. The physicians were in attendance a good portion of the day and gave every assistance that was known to medical and surgical skill, and it was thought that she might survive.

But alas for human hopes. The victim of the little bullet passed away Tuesday morning, surrounded by a sorrowing family.

The case is a truly deplorable one and is a lesson to all that brings home the thought that weapons, whether large or small, should not be allowed in the hands of people so young as was this lad.

Mrs. TILDEN was a highly respected woman, whose tragic death is sincerely mourned by a large circle of friends. She was a member of the Catholic church and the funeral services were held at the St. Joseph's church Wednesday forenoon at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Dean CAROLAN. A large number of friends attended, showing by their sorrow the grief engendered, by so untimely and tragic a death.

ROSS who died at the age of 39 years on April 24, 1875 of tuberculosis, Patch Grove, Wisconsin. Julia and Edwin were the parents of one son, Gilman Gibson ROSS. Julia married second September 6, 1876, Kingston, Wisconsin, James Alfred TILDEN and were the parents of two sons, Irving R. and Augustine Carlyle TILDEN. Julia and James divorced January 2, 1883. At some time after 1883, Julia and her youngest son Augustine moved to Mason City, Iowa. Julia was interred at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa. Augustine died in Los Angeles, California at the age of 79 years on August 7, 1960.
