October 17, 2010ROCKWELL – Johanna HEAFORD, 92, of Rockwell, died Wednesday (Oct. 13, 2010) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Rockwell with the Rev. Joel DAHLEN presiding. Interment will be at the Rockwell Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday (today) at Retz Funeral Home, Sheffield. Those wishing to may direct memorials to St. Peter's Lutheran Church or the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.
Johanna Marie KOENEN was born on Nov. 29, 1917, on the family farm near Latimer, a daughter of Harm Sr. and Sena (HALFWASSEN) KOENEN. She graduated from Latimer High School and received a two year teacher's diploma from Central College. Johanna returned to the Latimer area where she taught at country schools in the area.
On June 15, 1938, Johanna was united in marriage with Oscar Carl HEAFORD at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She became an active member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church and a devoted mother to her children. She also did secretarial work and bookkeeping for her husband's oil service.
After Oscar's death in 1975, Johanna worked at Younkers in the domestics department for several years. She loved fishing trips each year to Minnesota with the family which continued with her husband long after their children were grown. They also enjoyed Rockwell-Swaledale sports during their children's participation and for years to follow. She remained active in the church with Ladies Aid and Sunday School. Bird-watching was also a favorite activity.
Johanna is survived by her daughter Elaine (Dallas) ABRAMS, Menifee, Calif.; a son, Bill (Katie) HEAFORD, Dysart; grandchildren, Douglas ABRAMS and son Dalton, Lisa (Geoff) CONRAD and children Brittany, Jacquelin and Brandon, David (Kimberly) ABRAMS and daughter Annalyse, Christian HEAFORD and son Boston, Andrew (Heather) HEAFORD, Amy (David) CAREY and children Calista, David, Piper and Johanna, Elizabeth CHALISE and children Jazen and Nicholas, Anne (Adam) HAPPEL and son Beckett, and Brett HEAFORD; sister-in-law, Vi KOENEN, Hampton and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Darrell, four sisters and three brothers.
