Obituary - Betty Jean (Black) Vogel

VENTURA, IOWA - Betty Jean VOGEL, 75 of Ventura, IA, died Friday March 28, 2008 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, IA. Funeral Services will be held 1:30 PM Monday March 31, 2008 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, 301 South Main, Ventura, IA, with Reverend Daird KORTH officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura, IA.

Betty Jean VOGEL of Ventura, IA was born November 23, 1932 at the doctor's house in Clarinda, IA, the daughter of John & Stella Blanche (GELL) BLACK. She grew up on a farm the oldest of three. Betty was baptized October 15, 1948 at Northboro. She attended country school nine years in Page County and graduated from Northboro High School 2nd in her class in 1951. She was confirmed June 8, 1958 at the Lutheran Memorial Church, Ames, IA, she was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura for seventeen years and was a devoted Christian. She attended Drake University and finished her associate's degree with a 3.9 grade point average. On December 19, 1952 she married Norman Wayne VOGEL at Trinity Lutheran in Shenandoah, IA. From this union three daughters were born; Julie, Tammy, Laurie and one son Douglas who died in infancy. Betty was a devoted wife and mother.

Betty loved children. She taught elementary school 2 years and for 4 years was a substitute teacher in the Clear Lake Schools. She taught Sunday school in the Lutheran Church for 15 years while the girls were growing up. She also taught Bible School 5 years. Betty also was a Girl Scout leader for eleven years, a Girl Scout Day Camp Leader two years and a Day Camp Manager two years.

Betty owned and managed Raggedy Ann & Andy Day Care School for 13 years. She worked hard to be sure all three daughters could receive a college education.

She is survived by her husband Norman VOGEL, Ventura, IA; daughters Julie (Richard) MANKE and their children Drew, Reed and Lane, Hastings, MN; Tammy (Philip) CARLS, Tipton, IA and their children Abram & Alexandra; Laurie (Aric) SLOTERDYK, Marion, IA and their children Aaron & Luke; sister Kay (Robert) PIPPIN, Atlanta, MO; sisters-in-law Alice McILVENNA, Eugene, MO, Wilma (Tom) TURNBULL, Blanchard, IA and Delores MURPHY, Braddyville, IA, Anita VOGEL, Elmo, Mo, and Judy CORDLE, Urbandale, IA, and many nieces, nephews, friends, and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother John BLACK and son Douglas.
