Portage, Wis.; Nicholas A. "Nick" VENECHUK, 74, of Portage and formerly of Sturgis, died June 28, 1998, at the University Hospital in Madison following a brief illness.

He was born Feb. 24, 1924, in Mason City, Iowa, a son of Nicholas and Rachel (BEISEL) VENECHUK.

On Sept. 2, 1944, he was united in marriage with Rudella M. KRAMER in Austin, Minn. They resided in Mason City, Iowa, and Waseca, Minn., before moving to Sturgis in 1966 and to Portage in 1973.

He was a salesman in the dairy equipment industry throughout his life. He was employed by Surge, Universal Dairy Equipment, Zero Milking Equipment and Con-Cor before working as an independent sales representatives in his later years.

A member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portage, he served as an usher and Eucharistic minister. He also used his talents as a salesman by selling lottery calendars for the church each year and chairing the fund-raiser in 1996 and 1997.

He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus C.W. Henney Council # 1637 and a 4th Degree member of the Fr. Bourgmeyer Assembly, the Portage Boat Club, and the Portage Elks Lodge # 675.

Surviving are his wife; 10 children and their spouses, Georgia and Harry REDMAN of Fairbault, Minn., Nick and Mary VENECHUK of Rockford, Mich., Judy and Eddie CHOBOT BROWN of Sturgis, Jan and Craig CHAPMAN of Pardeeville, Tim and Cheryl VENECHUK of Healy, Alaska, Mike and Sally VENECHUK of Wilmette, Ill., Bill VENECHUK of Dalton, Sara and John GROSSMAN of Portage, Staff Sgt. Matt and Tammy VENECHUK of Phoenix, Ariz., and Melissa and Craig FITZWILLIAMS of Baraboo; 24 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Clarice VENECHUK of Grafton, Iowa; one sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Don BEHM of Arizona; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Peter Anthony VENECHUK; one grandson, Jared WINKLEPLECK; one son-in-law, Michael WINKLEPLECK; one sister, Florence MILLER, and one brother-in-law, LeRoy MILLER.

Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portage, Wis. The Rev. Raymond Dischler will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Portage.

Memorials may be directed to the St. Mary's Catholic School Endowment Fund. Arrangements were handled by the Port-Axtell Community Funeral Home, 302 E. Conant St., Portage, WI 53901
