From a Clear Lake, Iowa newspaper - no name or date.

GRAVESIDE SERVICE HELD TUESDAY FOR MRS. JOHNSON,
Died at Santa Monica, Cal.; Was Former Clear Lake Resident.

“A large group of people, new friends and old, relatives, church school and club members gathered in the Clear
Lake cemetery at 4:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, for the graveside services of Mrs. Carrie Johnson, 78, former Laker, who passed away at the home of her son at Santa Monica, Cal., last Thursday morning, March 14, (1940)
following a stroke.
“The remains were laid to rest in the family plot beside her husband Lee Johnson, who preceded his wife in death by five years. His ashes were brought to Clear Lake cemetery by his wife about three years ago.
“Carl Johnson, son of Mrs. Johnson, accompanied the body from California and a niece, Mrs. Bert Epperson,
came from Omaha. Other relatives present were two sisters, Mrs. Will Rich, Clear Lake and Mrs. J. E. Galloway, Austin Minn., and two brothers, Charles Warren of Austin and Fred Warren, Cedar Falls, and three nieces, Mrs. Frank Palmer, Mrs. Juanita Church and Miss Abbie Eldridge, Clear Lake. Frank Warren, Torrance, Cal. was the only other surviving member of the parental family unable to be present.
She is also survived by a granddaughter, Mrs. John Fox, Redond Beach Cal., and a great granddaughter, Patricia
Fox, besides several nieces and nephews.
Mr and Mrs. Lee Johnson were married in Clear Lake in September, 1882 and made their home here until about 1903 or 1904 when they moved to Morningside, Sioux City, where their son, Carl, who had graduated from our Clear Lake high school, was ready to enter college. Seventeen years ago the Johnsons went from Morningside to California, where they located at Redwood, later moving to Santa Monica.

Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were the parents of two children, a little daughter who died at the age of five, and is
buried in the Clear Lake cemetery, and Carl, who lives at Santa Monica.

Mrs. Johnson was a woman of the highest type of Christian character. Her life was spent in living for God and
righteousness and she was a blessing to every life in which she came in contact. During the time she lived in Clear Lake, she was active in every department of work in the Methodist church. She was also interested in projects for the betterment of the community. She was one of the band of women who worked hard to secure a library for Clear Lake, and was a charter member of the Library club.
When the Johnsons moved from Clear Lake her activity for the church and its interests did not cease and she
found special delight as a teacher in the church school. While at Sioux City she also became a member of the
P.E. O. which she greatly enjoyed.
Mrs Johnson was 78, but she was not old. Her mind was alert and youthful, and her wit and dry humor will be a memory never to be forgotten by her friends. Each day was lived as though in the presence of her Master.
No day was lived in vain. Her friends and loved ones mourn the loss of a wonderful woman.
One thing the family circle will miss greatly will be her letters. She had mastered the art of letter writing.
Her thoughts were always beautifully expressed, and there was pleasure in reading and re-reading them and between the sisters at least, there was always the weekly exchange. The many beautiful memories of her life
will never cease to live and “to live in hearts we leave behind is not to die”.
