MAYME A BACKER
DOUGHERTY- Mrs Mayme A. Backer, 86, Dougherty, died Thursday (June 2, 1983) at a Mason City hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dougherty, with Monsignor John Thorton officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at the St. Patrick's School chapel, Dougherty where a parish rosary will be recited at 7:30 tonight.
Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Backer was born in 1897 at Dougherty to James and Susan Cunningham. She attended St. Patrick's School, Dougherty, and married Martin Backer in 1919. They farmed in the Dougherty area. Mrs. Backer was employed by the hemp plant near Mason City during World War II. She worked in the kitchen at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Mason City for many years and was also a cook for the St. Patrick's Catholic School lunch program in Dougherty.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Charles (Mary) O'Harrow, Rockwell; Mrs. Melvin (Lucille) Morehouse, Sheffield, and Mrs. Robert (Bernice) White and Mrs. Chester (Mary Pat) Huffman, both of Charles City; 19 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; seven sisters, Mrs. Al (Agnes) Hinch, Mrs. Kenneth (Gladys) Lugar, Mrs. Glen (Frances) Klatt and Mrs. John (Gertrude) Hart, all of Mason City; Mrs. Ray (Josephine) McLaughlin, Dougherty, Sister Mary Paschael, Sheldon and Mrs. Henry (Rose) Gaubatz, Chicago, Ill.
