Funeral services for Ellen O. Mays, 88, Durant, were held Aug. 31, 1987 at Gloria Dei Lutheran church in Durant, with the Rev. David Lawson officiating. The organist was Mabyn Fox and the soloist was Jim Mays. Pallbearers were Jim Mays, Paul Mays, Dan Mays, Mark Mays, Tom Semsch, Jay Semsch and Craig Semsch. Burial was in the Durant cemetery.

Mrs. Mays died Aug. 28 at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.

The daughter of Sven and Caroline Peterson Johnson, she was born March 19, 1899 in Stockholm. Sweden. She married Cecil Jay Mays Nov. 29, 1919 in Davenport. She and her husband farmed in the Durant area until their retirement in 1947.

Mrs. Mays was a charter member of the Durant Legion Auxiliary and a former member of the Pythian Sisters and the Garden Club, both of Durant. She was also a member of Gloria Dei church.
