Funeral services for W. (Jay) Melson, 82, Cedar Rapids and formerly of Tipton, were held June 18, 1987 at Sheets and Son Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard Ernst officiating. The organist was Sylvia Gould and pallbearers were Ronald Christensen, John Naber, Jack Leverenz, William W. Naber, Prentice York, Wilson Howe and Rudy Dammier. Burial was in the Tipton Masonic cemetery.

Mr. Melson died June 15 at Heritage Acres Care Center in Cedar Rapids, following an extended illness.

The son of Alfred O. and Clara A. Kensinger, he was born Sept. 25, 1904 near Tipton. He attended the rural Cedar county schools. He married Ethel Frances in 1944 in Tipton and she preceded him in death in 1973. He married Lucy Hepker in 1979 in San Juan, Texas.

Mr. Melson was a retired farmer and carpenter and had worked on a Cedar county road maintenance crew. He had lived in Cedar Rapids since 1979 and was a member of Golden Rule Lodge 24 A.F. and A.M., Rochester and the First Methodist church of San Juan, Texas.

He is survived by his wife, 3 sisters, Mrs. Maude Naber, Tipton; Mrs. Bert (Frances) Blakesley, Elkhorn, Wis. and Mrs. Alvin (Blanche) Christensen, Tipton; a brother Mearl, San Juan, Texas and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, a sister and his first wife.
