Funeral services for Ralph Raymond (Sprig) Werling, 72, were held at the First United Church of Christ, Dec. 1, with the Rev. Dale Marshall officiating. Burial was in the Tipton Masonic cemetery.

Pallbearers were H. W., Richard H., Robert D., John F. and Keith Fields and Dean Challis. George Thordsen was vocalist and Mrs. Arnold Swan organist.

Mr. and Mrs. Max Nebergall and Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Miller were in charge of flowers.

Mr. Werling died of a heart attack while he and Mrs. Werling were vacationing in Honolulu, Hawaii, Nov. 25.

The son of Will and Myrta Wirek Werling, he was born in Tipton, July 18, 1903 and spent his life in the community. He graduated from Tipton high school in 1918.

He worked as a buttermaker at a Tipton creamery until he was appointed as a clerk in the Tipton post office in 1936. He spent 30 years in the Tipton post office, retiring as assistant postmaster in 1966.

During this time he became the best known "personality" in the post office, whose quips and banter gave him the reputation of one of the finest of Tipton wits and story-tellers.

He was married to Olivette Pehrson at the home of the bride in Red Oak, June 20, 1927.

He was an elder in First United Church of Christ and a member of the Masonic lodge.

Werling had a wide variety of interests, including sports and travel and he and Mrs. Werling had traveled widely in the United States since his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, a sister, Mrs. Frieda Fields, Tipton, and 2 brothers, Forrest, Neenah, Wis., and William, Henderson, Ky.

Werling was preceded in death by 3 sisters.
