Joseph Patrick O'Hara, 80, a native of Tipton and an 18 year Congressman from Minnestoa, died March 4 in Washington, D.C. He is a cousin to Francis and Loretta Mahoney and Mrs. Lloyd E. Meyer.

He was born in Tipton Jan. 23, 1895. The family moved to Spirit Lake where he graduated from high school. He served overseas in World War I from May 13, 1917 to August, 1919 and was promoted to captain in the quartermaster corps of the army. He was later commissioned a major in the infantry reserve.

He received his law degree from Notre Dame University in 1920 and was admitted to the bar in 1921. He began practice in Glenco, Minn. where he served as an attorney for villages, towns, cities and schools. He was county attorney of McLeon county from 1934 to 1938.

He was elected to Congress as a Republican in January, 1941 and served until 1959, when he was not a candidate for re-election. He opened a law practice in Washington following his retirement from Congress.
