Funeral services for Atty. Edwin C. Schluter, 87, Clarence, were held at the Chapman Funeral home, Clarence, Nov. 3 with the Rev. Donald Kehrli officiating. Burial was in the Clarence cemetery.

Pallbearers were Lester Kelly, Walter Kemmann, Paul Busching, Grover Penningroth, Harry Decker and Henry Feddersen. Mrs. King Kelly was vocalist with Mrs. Robert Joslin, organist.

The son of Ernst and Caroline Reinking Schluter, he was born on the Schluter farm 3 miles northwest of Lowden July 15, 1887. He attended the Quail Trap school in Massillon township, then Trinity Lutheran parochial school, Lowden, where he became a member of the Lutheran faith. He graduated from Clarence high school in 1907 as class valedictorian.

He attended the University of Iowa, leaving school in his senior year to become deputy clerk of the Cedar county district court. He returned to the University in 1913 to receive his BA degree. He then attended the school of law for a year.

He was married to Myrtie Brink Sept. 8, 1915 and the couple built a home in Clarence where they have lived since March 1, 1918. He operated the family farm and later a lumber and hardware business in Clarence. He completed his reading of the law with Cedar county attorneys and was admitted to the bar Oct. 8, 1931.

He served as chairman of the Republican Central committee and was elected to the Iowa Senate in 1942 and was re-elected in 1944, serving the district made up of Cedar, Jones and Jackson counties.

Mr. and Mrs. Schluter traveled in Europe, made a trip around the world and visited the Holy Land.

He was active in baseball as a young man and was a pitcher on the University of Iowa baseball team.

The city park in Clarence was a gift from Mr. Schluter, one of his many contributions to the community. He retired 10 years ago.

He is survived by his wife. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Otto, and 2 sisters, Mrs. Alma Schneider and Mrs. Caroline Smith.
