4 October 1973 - The Tipton Conservative

Roland F. Gordon, 44, former Tipton resident, died Sept. 25 in Phoenix, Ariz. as the result of injuries received in a single car accident in June in which his wife was killed instantly. Gordon had been hospitalized with severe injuries, including a broken pelvis and back, from June to Sept. 21, when he was released from the hospital. He had planned to return to Iowa the day that he died.

Final rites, following cremation, were held in Phoenix.

The only son of the late Frank and Margaret Gordon, he was a 1947 graduate of Tipton high school and the University of Iowa where he received a degree in physical education.

He was first employed by the YMCA at Clinton, then moved to Cedar Rapids. He worked for Interstate Finance and the Landis Loan company and then was a car salesman for Rapids Chevrolet. He operated the Cactus club on Center Point Road, for a year before moving to Phoenix in 1971.

He is survived by 5 children, Terri, 18, a student at the University of Arizona, Tucson; Randy, 17, Phoenix, Marty, 15; Angela 12 and Greg, 10. Terri and Angela have been staying with an aunt in Worthington, Ohio until Terri went to college and Marty and Greg with an uncle in Flagstaff.

A "memorial fund" is being started in behalf of the children. Anyone wishing to make a contribution may send it to Sheets and Son, Box 30, Tipton.
