August 2, 1973 - The Tipton Conservative

Last rites for M. Marguerite Geiger, 85, were held at the Sheets and Son Funeral home July 31 with the Rev. Thomas D. Wright officiating. Burial was in Moss Ridge cemetery, Carthage, Ill.

Pallbearers were Richard Palmer, Doug Emrich, Kirk Bixby and Russell Willer. Terri Thompson was vocalist and Mrs. Irma Crawford organist. Committal services were held at the Carthage cemetery.

Miss Geiger died at Cedar Manor July 29 following an extended illness.

The oldest daughter and second child of William G. W. and Flora Helen Manier Geiger, she was born in Tipton March 7, 1888. She and 3 sisters were raised in Carthage, Ill., by their maternal grandparents, her mother having died when Marguerite was 5 years old.

She graduated from Carthage high school in 1905 and attended Carthage college for a year. She and her sister, Helen, returned to Iowa, attended Cornell college and graduated in 1910. Her degree from Cornell entitled her to an Iowa state teacher's certificate and in the fall of 1912 she obtained a position as eighth grade teacher in the Mt. Vernon schools. In January, 1914, she accepted a position as teacher of mathematics in the Carthage high school and taught there through the 1916 school year.

In the fall of 1917 she entered the college of law of the University of Iowa, graduating in 1920 and passing the Iowa Bar examination. She practiced law with her father in Tipton under the firm name of Geiger and Geiger. After her father's death Oct. 8, 1931, she continued the practice of law for a time, principally probate work.

The press of family matters caused her to retire from active law practice in the late 1930's. She took over the responsibilities of the management of family business until ill health forced her complete retirement a number of years ago.

Except for her years in Carthage, Ill., she spent her life in the Tipton area. She is survived by a nephew, Robert H. Walters, and a brother-in-law, Henry Walters, both of Tipton. She was preceded in death by a brother and 3 sisters.

In a summary of her life, prepared by her, she closed with these autobiographical lines: "She regrets her many ineptitudes and hopes that her passing will be permitted to interfere as little as possible with the lives of those about her. She would wish that they shed no tears, but will fly the flag of the spirit a little higher."
