Funeral services for Emery Hemingway, 81, a lifelong resident of the West Branch area, were held at the West Branch Friends church Feb. 13 with the Rev. Edward English officiating. Burial was at Oasis.

Mr. Hemingway died at his farm home near Oasis in Johnson county Feb. 11.

Born Sept. 7, 1891 near Centerdale, he was the son of Albert Negus and Ada Adams Hemingway. He was a graduate of West Branch High School and was married in 1918 to Etta Coulter at Iowa City.

He was a retired farmer and had been active in the Johnson County Farm Bureau and Cedar County and State Historical associations. He was a member of the West Branch Friends Church.

Mr. Hemingway was a distant cousin of President Richard Nixon. Mr. Hemingway and President Nixon are great-grandsons of Hope Hemingway, who lived in West Branch.

Survivors include his wife; 2 daughters, Mrs. Robert (Esther) Murphy, West Branch and Mrs. Edwin (Ada) Teet, Union Grove, Wis.; 2 sons, Elmer E., West Branch and Keith P., Iowa City; 18 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Mrs. Linna Gleason, Solon and Mrs. May Davis, Milford.

He was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
