June 4, 1970 - The Tipton Conservative

Last rites June 2 at St. Mary church, Tipton, were a white mass celebrated by the Rev. Ray J. Pacha for Mrs. Esther E. Wholwend, 85, who died at Mercy hospital in Cedar Rapids, May 31. Burial was in the St. Boniface cemetery, Clinton. The rosary was recited at Sheets and Son Funeral home at 7:30 p.m. June 1.

She was born Aug. 31, 1884 to Frank and Ida Marier Blackman at Big Rock and educated in the Big Rock schools and the Wilton academy at Wilton Junction. She was married to William G. Wholwend July 2, 1917 at Tipton. Mrs. Wholwend was a sales clerk and housewife and had lived in Tipton since 1957. She belonged to St. Mary church and St. Teresa circle.

Survivors include 2 sisters, Mrs. Herman (Florence) Leabhart and Mrs. Mabel Moreland, both of Tipton and a nephew, Dick Leabhart of Centerville. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a brother.

Pallbearers were Dr. Carl Banks, Leonard Dice, Reno Droll, L. E. Aker, Wayne Miller and Carl Frederick. Mrs. Reno Droll was organist.
