Funeral services for Merrill H. Thomas, 80, were held at the Presbyterian church in Mechanicsville March 4 with the Rev. William Wills officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.

Mr. Thomas died March 2 at St. Luke's hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a 6-month illness.

The son of William A. and Fanny Hawthorne Thomas, he was born Feb. 5, 1890 at Mechanicsville and graduated from Mechanicsville high school. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and a veteran of World War I.

He spent his life in the Mechanicsville community, farming east of Mechanicsville until he retired in 1960. For the past 5 years he made his home with his niece, Mrs. Ray Jewell and her family.

In addition to Mrs. Jewell, he is survived by 3 other nieces, Mrs. George (Dorothy) Auld, Albert Lea, Minn.; Mrs. Jerry (Bettie) Hedin, Hayward, Calif. and Mrs. Mary Lou Craft, Pacific Grove, Calif. and 3 nephews, Don Thomas, Marion; Dale Thomas, Corvallis, Ore. and WIlliam Thomas, Charlestown air base, S.C.
