Mrs. Howard Rinehart, 52, Mechanicsville, was fatally injured when the car she was driving was involved in a collision with a car driven by Monte Gaul, 18, Tipton, 5 miles east of Cedar Rapids about 2 p.m. Feb. 4.

Mrs. Rinehart died in a Cedar Rapids hospital 5 hours after the accident as a result of head and chest injuries.

Gaul was taken to Mercy hospital, Cedar Rapids, with a severely fractured leg. It is expected he will have surgery on the leg Friday.

Darvin Hasenbank, 18, Tipton, received critical head injuries in the crash. He was first taken to Mercy hospital and then to University hospitals, Iowa City, because of head injuries. He was unconscious until Sunday. He was taken off the critical list Monday. He received a severe fracture of the cheek bone on the right side of his face and may have an injury to his right eye. He also received internal injuries.

Mrs. Rinehart was on her way to Cedar Rapids on a shopping trip before going to visit her daughter in Denver, Colo. Gaul and Hasenbank were returning to Tipton after finishing work at Wilson and company. The accident took place on a straight stretch of road, just west of the entrance to Palisades state park.

The Iowa High Patrol said that the collision occurred when Gaul's eastbound car left its lane to pass another car and crashed into Mrs. Rinehart's auto.

Funeral services for Mrs. Howard Rinehart, 52, were held Feb. 8 at the United Presbyterian church in Mechanicsville at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. William Wills officiated. Mrs. E. H. Littig was the organist and Mrs. Richard Davis sang.

Bethany Ann Lehrman Rinehart was born Jan. 9, 1918, the daughter of Walter J. and Freida Busching Lehrman. She was a graduate of the Stanwood high school and Cornell college, Mt. Vernon and taught school for several years at Rossie and Newhall.

She was married June 20, 1943 to Howard C. Rinehart in St. Paul's Lutheran church, Stanwood. They made their home in Mechanicsville. She was a member of the United Presbyterian church, the Garden club, Women's club, the United Presbyterian Women and the Questers.

Mrs. Rinehart is survived by her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Dean (Nyla Mae) Christiansen, Aurora, Colo.; her father, Walter Lehrman, Stanwood and a sister, Mrs. Max (Lorraine) Taylor and 2 nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother and a sister, Reva.

Howard Rhoads, David Edwards, Floyd Siver, Don Puffer, Forest Moffit and Merle Clifton were pallbearers.
