Roy Ernest Goodale, 76, former Cedar county recorder, died Sept. 8 at Veterans hospital, Knoxville. Funeral services were held Sept. 12 at Davenport, with burial in National cemetery at Rock Island.

The son of Elmer E. and Martha Alice Horn Goodale, he was born in Cedar county June 16, 1892 and was educated in the rural schools. An avid reader, he passed the teacher's examination and taught in the rural schools of the county.

He was elected recorder of Cedar county in 1914, at the age of 22, probably the youngest man to service in public office in Cedar county history. He serviced for 2 years.

Following World War I he returned to Tipton and became the first city carrier, working for the post office until 1934. Later he became a tool grinder at the Rock Island Arsenal.

Mr. Goodale enlisted in the Iowa National Guard as a member of a machine gun company stationed in Tipton, and saw service on the Mexican border. He returned to active service in March, 1917, as first sergeant and was discharged from the army in June, 1919 as a captain after having served in France with the First Replacement division.

He was married to Jane Catherine Best in Adel Aug. 11, 1917. She died in 1962. He was married to Pansy Weaver Griffin in Davenport in 1965. She died in 1966.

Mr. Goodale is survived by 3 stepdaughters, Mrs. Frank Matteson, Grant City, Mo.; Mrs. Willard Jones, Loomis, Calif. and Mrs. Jack Conklin, Lancaster, Calif.; 3 stepsons, Frank Ihns, Cester; Vern Ihns, Phoenix, Ariz. and Eugene Halbert, Sacramento, Calif. and 2 sisters, Mrs. Charles VeDepo, Iowa City, and Mrs. Charles Bolton, Tipton.
