11 September 1969 - The Tipton Conservative

Last rites for Donald M. Johnston, 58, Sugar Creek township farmer and cement contractor, were held at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 26 at the South Bethel church. Burial was in the South Bethel cemetery.

Mr. Johnston died at Mercy hospital, Iowa City, Aug. 23.

The Rev. J. Van Mantgem officiated at the services with Steven G. Chambliss organist. Pallbearers were Clare and Kenneth Nebergall, Maurice Martin, Donald Challis, Lester Chambliss and Le Roy Shaull. Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Langley, Mrs. Jack Reeve and Mrs. Maurice Martin were in charge of flowers.

Masonic services were conducted at the graveside by the Golden Rule Lodge No. 24, AF & AM, Rochester. The Sheets and Son Funeral home was in charge.

The son of Samuel R. and Maude Latta Johnston, he was born near Tipton Oct. 5, 1910 and graduated from Tipton high school in 1929. He was married to Margaret Kruse at Wilton March 31, 1946. He was a lifetime resident of the South Bethel area where he farmed and was a cement contractor.

He was a member of the South Bethel church, the Rochester Masonic lodge and a veteran of World War II.

Mr. Johnston is survived by his wife, 3 daughters, Ellen Marie, Iowa; City; Margaret Ann, Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Eldon (Nancy) Hotz, Iowa City; 3 sisters, Mrs. Gladys McCroskey and Mrs. George (Margaret) Worsham, both of Tipton and Mrs. Earl (Katherine) Weldch, Madison, N.J., and 2 brothers, Ralph, Tipton, and Clark, Miami, Fla.

He was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
