Last rites for Harold Jacob Maurer, 84, Mechanicsville attorney, were held at First Presbyterian church, Mechanicsville, Feb. 28 with the Rev. William S. Wills officiating. The Horner funeral home was in charge.

Pallbearers were Merle Clifton, Everett Ferguson, F. M. Wilson, Forest Rhoads, Weldon Woods and Robert Davis. Mrs. Leroy Wendt and Mrs. Floyd Siver were vocalists. Mrs. E. Littig was organist.

Mr. Maurer died at his home in Mechanicsville Feb. 25.

The son of John L. and Mary Elizabeth Miller Maurer, he was born at Waterloo July 24, 1884. He was educated at Grinnell academy, the Waterloo Business college and Grinnell college and received his law degree from the University of Iowa in 1912.

He was married to Sara A. McIlrath at Grinnell June 15, 1915. He served in the army during World War I. He lived in Dewar, Waterloo, Grinnell, Iowa City, Montezuma and Mechanicsville.

Mr. Maurer had practiced law in Mechanicsville for more than a half century and was president of the Mechanicsville Trust and Savings bank for 28 years. He served as Mechanicsville postmaster from 1923 to 1936.

He was a member of the American Legion, post No. 309, the Cedar County and Iowa Bar associations, AF & AM 155, the Royal Arch Masons, the Presbyterian church, the Lion's club and was at one time a member of the Mechanicsville Chamber of Commerce.

He is survived by his wife, a sister, Mrs. Pearl Smith, New Braunfels, Texas, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Foster and Charles.
