Memorial services for Mrs. Verlin (Sara M.) Pemberton, 79, former West Branch resident, will be held at the Hickory Grove meeting house at the Scattergood school at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14. Mrs. Pemberton died in Phoenix, Ariz. Sept. 20 following a short illness.

Contributions are being accepted at Scattergood school for a memorial fund to be used to purchase books for the school, and for the planting of a memorial tree at the school.

Mr. and Mrs. Pemberton lived in West Branch more than 50 years before moving to Phoenix in 1966, a city where they had spent winters the past 10 years.

Mrs. Pemberton was born Sara Hinshaw at Galena, Kan., Oct. 9, 1887. She taught school until her marriage in 1914 to Verlin L. Pemberton.

The couple farmed near West Branch. Among a variety of activities Mrs. Pemberton helped with a refugee hostel under the auspices of the American Friends Service committee. Later she helped in the reopening of Scattergood Boarding School, and has served continuously on the school committee since that time.

She also served as a delegate to two World Friends conferences, and spent a winter in Mexico as a counselor to the American Friends Service Committee young people's work camp.

She also was a long-time member of Centerdale Federated club and Farm Bureau rural women.

Surviving are her husband; 3 daughters, Mrs. George (Lillian) Wiloughby, Deptford, N.J., Mrs. Clark (Beulah) DeHaven, West Covina, Calif., and Mrs. Virgil (Alice) Smith, Urbandale; a son, Ernest, Arvada, Colo.; and 9 grandchildren.
