June 2, 1966 - The Tipton Conservative

Funeral services for Mrs. June H. Witmer, 77, were held May 27 at the Tipton Methodist church with the Rev. Eugene Miller officiating. Burial was in the Tipton Masonic cemetery.

Pallbearers were Judge B. J. Maxwell, Atty. Norman Hamiel, Atty. Grant White, Robert Reeve, Don Conrad and Don Nelson. Mrs. Irma Crawford was organist.

The Dye funeral home was in charge of the service.

Mrs. Witmer died at the Rice Custodial home May 25, following an extended illness.

The daughter of Calvin I. and Nancy E. Van Buren Handley, she was born June 1, 1888 in Tipton. She was a graduate of Tipton high school and the University of Iowa in 1914.

Mrs. Witmer was a member of the Tipton Methodist church, a charter member of the Women's Society of Christian Service, a charter member and first president of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was a charter member and first Regent of the Open Prairie chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution when it was organized in Tipton in 1940, and was also a charter member of the Kings Daughters of Tipton.

Mrs. Witmer was a member of the Searchlight club and The Eastern Star. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, winning that scholastic honor at the University of Iowa.

She was a former member of the Child Conservation league.

Mrs. Witmer is survived by a son, Forest Calvin, Denver, Colo.; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Louise Kingsburg, Oak Park, Ill.; 3 brothers, Deane and Charles, Tipton and Brady, Solon; a sister, Blanche Handley, Tipton and 7 grandchildren.
