March 18, 1965 - The Tipton Conservative

Funeral services for Mrs. George D. (Bess) York, 79, will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Dye Funeral home with the Rev. Harley Yates of Kinross officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery at Cedar Rapids.

Pallbearers are Leo Fisher, Frank Fisher Jr., Alvah Morphew, Edward Crock, Harold Laing and Joseph Meyers. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Riedesel Jr. are the vocalists.

Mrs. York died March 15 at her home in Tipton. She had been ill since March 9 when she suffered a heart attack.

The daughter of George W. and Clara Henkell Bohrer, she was born on a farm near Mercersburg, Penn., Dec. 14, 1885 where she attended the rural schools. In March, 1905, she moved to Clarence. She attended Mount Morris College, Mount Morris, Ill. and, before her marriage, she was a teacher in the rural schools of Fairfield township.

She was married to George D. York of Cedar Rapids in the home of John Zook in Clarence in August, 1911. They lived in Cedar Rapids for several years, then moved to a farm south of Clarence. After retiring from the farm she spent a few years in California, returning to Tipton where, for 15 years, she has been the constant companion of an invalid cousin, Mrs. Gladys Lash.

She was a member of the Church of the Brethren.

She is survived by a son, J. Prentice, Clarence; a daughter, Mrs. Lloyd (Mary) Achenbach, Center Point; 4 grandsons, Jerry York, Princeton, N. J.; Phillip York, Chicago, Ill.; Laverne Achenbach, Center Point and Daryl Achenbach, both of Center Point, 2 great-grandsons; a brother, Bruce Bohrer, Paramount, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Carl Schlutz, Neosho, Mo.; 2 half-sisters, Mrs. Ruella Darrak, Tiltonsville, Ohio and Mrs. Minnie Harter, Fort Louden, Penn.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1947, a brother and 2 sisters.
