Maude E. Lane, 88, who was born in West Branch and lived in the West Liberty area, died in Berkeley, Calif. March 14.

Funeral service will be today (Thursday) at Beckman's in Iowa City with the Rev. Eugene H. Hancock officiating. Burial will be in West Branch cemetery.

Miss Lane taught in several rural schools in Iowa following her graduation from Iowa State Teachers college. She received her M.A. degree in 1907.

She moved to Santa Barbara, Calif., where she taught for about 10 years, then returned to Iowa and taught school for handicapped children for about 10 years at University hospital.

She wrote a book, "Our Garden", dedicated to the crippled children of Iowa, and returned to California.

She was a member of the Methodist church, secretary and reporter for the Women's Bible class, a charter member of the Santa Barbara Historical society, and an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Iowa Historical society.
