Lon E. Lewis, 79, a lifelong resident and widely known businessman of West Liberty, a native of Cedar County, died in Mercy hospital in Iowa City June 19.

Funeral services were June 22 at the Presbyterian church in West Liberty. The Rev. Robert Reynolds officiated. Burial was in the Oakridge cemetery.

Mr. Lewis was born in Cedar county Nov. 11, 1884, the son of Henry and Susan Leonard Lewis. He was graduated from Springdale high school in 1905. Mr. Lewis was married to Inez MacGowan January 21, 1914, in West Liberty.

He established a hardware store in West Liberty in 1913 and later expanded it into a hardware and grocery business, which he operated until his retirement in 1954. He served on the board of directors of the Iowa Retail Hardware association for many years.

Mr. Lewis was a 50-year member of both the Mt. Cavalry Masonic lodge in West Liberty and the Order of the Eastern Star. He was a member of the Zarapath consistory, and a 32nd degree and K.C.C.H. Mason in the Kaaba shrine, Davenport. He was also a member of the White shrine in Iowa City.

He was an active member of the Presbyterian church in West Liberty.

Survivors are his widow; a son, Lester, of Davenport; a daughter, Mrs. Ed Eichelberger, of West Liberty; 2 brothers, Harry F. Lewis, of West Liberty and Ernest Lewis, of Gillette, Wyo.; a sister, Mrs. Ruby Ellyson, St. Paul, Minn.; and 5 grandchildren.
