12 September 1963 - The Tipton Conservative

A farm tractor accident on a Tipton farm Sept. 7 fatally injured Dean Allen Spies, 11-months-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Spies.

The boy died shortly after the mid-morning mishap in the office of a Tipton doctor. Death was attributed to a skull fracture.

It was reported that Dean was playing a few feet from the farm house. A tractor was parked in the area. An older brother climbed up on the tractor and released the brake, causing it to roll forward, striking the child.

The Spies live on the H. F. Maurer farm, about 3 miles southwest of Tipton.

Survivors include his parents; brothers, Jim, Bob, Gary, Ronnie, Terry and Richard and 3 sisters, Connie, Bonnie Sue and Diane, all at home; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rohwer, Davenport; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Ida Spies, Walcott and several aunts and uncles.

Services were at 1 p.m. Monday in Davenport.
