Mrs. Nellie Bates Sanger, 82, a native of Springdale, died at her home in Iowa City Aug. 20 after becoming ill suddenly Aug. 19.

Funeral services were held Aug. 22 with the Rev. Robert Engel of St. Mark's Methodist church officiating. Burial was in Oakland cemetery, Iowa City.

Mrs. Sanger was born Sept. 26, 1880 near Springdale, a daughter of Fred and Anna Phelps Bates. She was married to William Sanger May 8, 1902 at Springdale and they farmed in the West Liberty area until moving to Iowa City in 1924. She had taught school at Springdale before her marriage. Mrs. Sanger was a member of Iowa Woman's club, St. Mark's Methodist church, Iowa City and was active in the W.S.C.S. there.

Survivors include the husband; four sons, Kenneth of Rochelle, Ill., Merle, Azusa, Calif., Lysle, Iowa City and Lester, Lincoln, Nebr.; 3 daughters, Mrs. Foster (Moneta) Adams, Bettendorf; Mrs. Karl (Ardis) Kaufmann, Tenafly, N.J., and Mrs. Carl (Wanda) Demory, Iowa City; 2 brothers, Floyd Maxson, Iowa City and Chesley Maxson, Atalissa; 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Preceding Mrs. Sanger in death were an infant son; a daughter, Alta; and one brother.
