Funeral services for Jim Stafford, 70, a grain dealer in Tipton for a quarter of a century, were held Sept. 1 at the Sheets and Dahn funeral home with the Revs. James Elvig of Stanwood and Eugene Miller of Tipton in charge. Burial was in the Tipton Masonic cemetery.

Pallbearers were Floyd Tipton, Gene Harden, Delmar Thumm, Donald Ogden, Robert Dettman and Eugene Moore II. Mrs. Wendell Willer was vocalist and Mrs. Irma Crawford, organist. Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Sheets, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Frederick and Mrs. Addie Eves were flower attendants. Masonic services were held at the graveside.

Mr. Stafford died Aug. 29 at Mercy hospital in Iowa City where he had been a patient for several weeks. He had been ill for about 2 years.

James Stafford, son of Robert and Louise Zorn Stafford, was born at Petersburg, Ill., Feb. 16, 1893 and attended the schools of Petersburg and Johnson county, Iowa.

He was married to Erna Meyer at Lone Tree Feb. 4, 1914 and the couple farmed in the West Liberty area. In 1937 he entered the feed and grain business, turning over the operation of the business to his son, Robert, in 1962.

Mr. Stafford served as councilman from the first ward from 1946 to 1960, later serving as a member of the park board. He was a member of the Tipton Planning and Zoning commission at the time of his death.

Mr. Stafford was a member of Cedar Lodge No. 11, A.F. & A.M., the Loyal Order of the Moose and the Odd Fellows lodge.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Robert and a daughter, Mrs. William (Esther) Barkhurst, Tipton; 4 grandchildren, Dick and Jerry Stafford and James DeForest, all of Tipton; Mrs. William (Patricia) Farbacher, Pittsburgh, Pa., and 7 great-grandchildren.
