Funeral services for Dr. J. E. Smith, 89, who had served as a physician in Clarence for more than 60 years, where held July 9 in St. Paul's Lutheran church at Stanwood. The Rev. Reginald Muhl was in charge, with burial in the Lutheran cemetery in Lowden. The Chapman funeral home was in charge.

Dr. Smith died in a Cedar Rapids hospital July 6 after suffering 2 strokes.

He was born Nov. 6, 1873 in Deep River, where he attended school. He entered Rush Medical college in Chicago, Ill., working his way through school. He came to Clarence Sept. 1, 1900, and he continued his practice until he was hospitalized 5 weeks before his death. His was undoubtedly the longest, continuous practice of any Cedar county doctor.

Dr. Smith was married to Ida Kruckenberg Nov. 30, 1925 in Cedar Rapids and the couple spent their married lives in Clarence. Dr. Smith was a 50-year member of the American Medical association, a life member of St. Paul's Lutheran church in Stanwood.

He was honored at a "Dr. Smith" day in 1950, when he celebrated completion of 50 years of practice in Clarence.

He is survived by his wife; 2 daughters, Mrs. Thelma L. Ingram, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. Myrna Benedict, Shell Beach, Calif.; 2 brothers, Peter, Rock Island, Ill., and Lester, Torrance, Calif.; 2 sisters, Mrs. Jenny Connell, Iowa City and Ethel Goodwin, Lincoln, Nebr., and 2 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 6 brothers and sisters.
